I don't know what it is, but I love to read the news. My obsession with news reading began in my early 20's. The rise of the Internet (no kids, I didn't have access to the Internet in middle or high school) gave me access to a plethora of news outlets. Every morning, I would get up before work and check all my news sites--CNN, Fox News, The Dallas Morning News (before it required a paid subscription), The Corpus Christi Caller Times (I grew up there), Yahoo News. I know, I know, sounds kinda weird, but I just feel like I learn so much from reading the news. News sites just don't carry "the news." They also carry lifestyle stories, scientific advancements, entertainment buzz. The list goes on and on.
Anyway, during my daily news reading, I found this article "At Some Schools, 'Big Brother' is Watching." The title had me intrigued. What are they watching I wondered? The article described a school district where the school is monitoring kids online interaction. It is normal for a school to monitor a student's activity when they are online at school, but in this case they are monitoring students activity at home. There is much debate over whether or not a school has the right to monitor and dole out discipline to students based on things they do when they are not in school. With several recent suicides linked to cyberbullying, it seems like a good idea for schools to know what is going on outside of school hours between students. Personally, I have mixed feelings on the issue. Why should students get in trouble at school for incidents that occur off school property and not during school hours? At the same time though, the social media provides an opportunity for constant contact between students. In the past, students who were being bullied could at least escape their tormentors when they left school. But today, that's not the case. Students have constant connection through the Internet.
Even after reading the article, I'm not sure how I feel about the issue. What do you think? Read the article and let me know!
I think they shouldn't be allowed but if it passed only do it for certain schools. Not the schools where it is unneeded.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the school district should monitor the student activity online at home because they are not the students parents at school it's fine but at home that is just like invading people's privacy. If people are getting cyber bulled their family and them need to take care of it on their own and if the bullying is that serious the student that is getting bullied should just not reply back to the bully. I don't think schools should monitor students internet activity at home.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they should watch students when they are outside of school. I mean, the parents are responsible for checking up on their kids. If they choose not to do that then that's their choice. But it isn't right for schools to do it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they should watch us. I mean, it almost feels like stalking and it makes me feel uncomfortable...
ReplyDeleteBy making an account on any social website, you are putting yourself at risk to be bullied. If you don't want to run into any problems, just stay away! And, the school should't have the right/responsibility to monitor the kid's activity... It's the job of the parent, and the parent only.
ReplyDeletei do not think they should watch us at home. they would be invading my privacy!! It's just wrong! Let our parents decide what we do at home!
ReplyDeletei think it's wrong for them to invade our privacy like that too, but think about it. if the school could prevent even one suicide from being that invasive, it would be best they would. i think we should put everyones mental health before our privacy needs. just a thought :)
ReplyDeleteThey should not be allowed to monitor what I do outside of school. It's none of their business and not their responsibility. If someone is being mean to you, there is always the option to block them and ignore it. They will get bored. If it continues, delete your account. Its as simple as that.
ReplyDeleteI think It's wrong for the school to watch what we are doing at home. If something were to happen in school then the school could take care of that but if it's outside of school it's none of their business to worry about our life outside of school!
ReplyDeleteIf the school was watching my every move online, I would be a little creeped out. I understand that they are trying to keep us safe, but that is out privacy and our life. If we want the school to know then we will tell them. I think they should stay out of my business out side of school.
ReplyDeleteI dont think they should be monitoring us at home because 1. we should have our own privacy and life out of school 2. if any monitoring, that would be our parents job and 3. we should be trusted with the responsibilty of our own private online accounts
ReplyDeleteSchool's should not be worrying about what kids do on the internet at home. It is alright to monitor what they do on the internet ONLY in school. When children are at home, they should feel safe. Home is a place where you feel secure and comfortable. School's monitoring behavior of kids when they are at home is wrong and should be a law.
ReplyDeletethe school shouldn't monitor the student's if it has nothing to do with the school. The 7th graders' iPads are monitored but that is school property so the administrator have the right to monitor them. I believe if what we do online is not school related then it should not be brought up at school.
ReplyDeleteI think the school should only be able to monitor certain things. Like the blog, website, and stuff like that. If they watch more stuff then that the kids will start feeling un-safe. People should feel safe on their own site.
ReplyDeleteSchools shouldn't be monitoring kids outside of school. There are good reasons, this is true, but its only good to a certain degree. The school should not monitor and/or punish kids for what we do in our personal lives. That is up to us and our parents.
ReplyDeleteSchools should not monitor what kids do at home because that is their parents job. Some parents have different limits and boundaries for what their kids are allowed to search up. So i think schools should just leave all of that up to the kids parents.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's okay for school's to monitor us outside of school or on social media. The only time they should monitor us is in school and in school only! It's not any of their business, and you should know that you are in risk of getting bullied when you join twitter, instagram, etc...
ReplyDeleteI think that schools should not be able to monitor us outside of school. Different parents, have different rules and restrictions on what their kids can do on the internet or any social media. I think that the schools should just trust the parents and if they do have a problem to notify the parent instead of looking at what each kid does outside of school
ReplyDeleteI don't have mixed feelings on this what so ever. I strongly disagree to schools monitoring childrens lifes outside of school. Nothing will sway me anout this unless the monitoring had something to do with suspicios activity or bullying, but other than that i do not think that schools have the right to do that.

DeleteI totally agree with you they have no right unless they know we are being bullied and if someone is being cyberbullied shouldnt they just leave the social network?
DeleteI am on the fence, personally. I believe that it could be beneficial, in the case of preventing future harassment, but there is only so much that they could do. In the case of the 12 year old girl, I am pretty sure that the school knew about the bullying, but they could only do so much. Social media relies on the user, and in some cases the parents of the user, to determine whether or not they should post what they are posting. If the school had access to the account, they could tell the parents, but then it is in their hands.
ReplyDeleteI don't think schools should watch us outside of the school because their main priority is to teach us new things and lead us in the right direction. Parents should be the only ones to watch us outside of school because they're our parents. Also, i know for a fact that nobody would be comfortable doing things outside of school if they knew the school was watching them. i know i wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they should monitor us once we leave school!!! Our parents should be the only ones concerned with what we do at home, and the district can look at what we do at school. If they watched what id did on the internet at home and school they would just be the same as the other stalkers out there.
ReplyDeleteI am on both sides. It would be great if we could prevent future suicides, but I think we should have our privacy. It is not their right to know what we are doing 24/7. If someone was being bullied online, the victim could always get a new cell phone number and delete their account they were being bullied on. They don't have to look at the hurtful words. It is their choice.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they should watch what happens online at home. I think school is there to teach us and to help us learn, not to watch every move we make..... Parents or Guardians should be the one to watch us. They are there to look out for us and we are their responsibility, so they should be the ones to set rules and regulations when going online.
ReplyDeleteI don't like this... i think that we should have our privacy and that our school should not be a part of our outside social life..
ReplyDeleteI understand why they want to monitor us during school, but at home? Thats ridiculous! We should be able to have our privacy off campus.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of on both sides. Schools should not be monitoring our outside life... but then again...if something like cyber-bullying comes up, at least the school would know...

ReplyDeleteI don't think that they should watch what we are doing out of school. I understand why they think that they should while we are in school that's a given. After school is a little excessive I think. Students should have the right to have some things private and if you took that away then there would no longer be any privacy and that could become a problem.
ReplyDeleteWhy is our home life any of there business? I think their job is to make sure that we do well in school, but when it comes to home, if cyber bullying really is a problem, the kid's parents should handle that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with JoseM, This isn't even a question for me. Yes, cyber-bullying is a huge issue in this generation, but that does not give schools the right to take a step into our personal lives and privacy. We go to school every weekday and deal with their security 7 hours straight. We don't need that as home as well. We'll never feel alone. As people, we need privacy, online or not. And doing this would most likely abolish it completely.
ReplyDeleteI think It's wrong for the school to watch what we are doing at home. It's ours' and our parents' business of what we do at home. The school should only watch what we are doing in school because when we are at school, the school is almost like our parent then. We have a right for our privacy and ours only.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings to because when i first read that they were monitering them at home i was really shocked that they were aloud to do that. After i continued to read i saw that they did it becasue of cyberbullying and i started to understand why they did it. But on the other hand it is none of the schools buisness as to what kids do at home that is their parents responsibility.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is okay for the school to us at home. That is our personal time and what we choose to do is between us and our parents. The school is no longer in charge of students after hours.
ReplyDeleteThe school does NOT have the right to monitor our online activity at home! What we do at home is private. In my opinion the school should't know anything about our home life.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, there is no reason to stalk all of your students. For example, if you play a violent online game at home, why should you be in trouble at school? As for cyber-bullying, they don't have to read those words that the bully said. Sure they might look at it the first couple of times, but don't you think that they should learn to not read that persons comments?
ReplyDeleteI don't like that schools think its okay to watch what we do out of school. We weren't accepted to the school we(our parents specifically)chose us to go to the school we go to.We have to be monitored by our parents we don't need the school included.
ReplyDeleteI don't think schools should be able to monitor us out of school, stuff we do outside of school is not the schools business; if it was our parents would probably say something if we needed them to
ReplyDeletethat makes me soooooo mad! they shouldnt be stalking us like creepers now im going to go make shure none of you are wathing me really though I don't like it or the idea of it.
ReplyDeletei think that after school hours the school should be minding their own buisness. Not to be rude but its our time to do what we want, we can spend it however we want to. We have parents to look over us. We dont need the school monotoring our every move if our parents already do that
ReplyDeleteI think that the schools should not be able to access that information unless there is a problem they are having with that student. and the have permission from their parent to look at that. but otherwise they should not be regularly looking at students social networking accounts.
ReplyDeleteI think they should because if they are being cyber bully they know who was doing it and put a stop to, but they should only monitor the stuff that is School related.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't like it even if cyber bullying was a big problem at school. A lot of stuff I do at home, I don't tell my friends about only my family
ReplyDeletei don't think that they should be any near our personal life, if you want to stop cyber-bulling turn off your computer and go shot hoops or something at least you can get a job with basketball but you sure cant get a job on social media. i think society should just find the good in them and just be nice to people.
ReplyDeleteSchools shouldn't monitor a students personal life they should only control what happens on school property. They shouldn't monitor students that's why it is called a PERSONAL life.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that schools should monitor students on their devices! It's their parent's jobs to monitor the student's social media and keep up with their online lives. It doesn't have anything to do with the schools or the teachers for that matter. It would totally invade student's out of school lives!!
